I noticed that the trailers on TV for the movie Shutter Island looked really intriguing. I saw the book in the bookstore and realized the book was by Dennis Lehane so I picked it up. And never put it down. This book moves along so well that you are half way through it before you look up. It's a tense psychological drama that will suck you in. In the book, Teddy, is out to get the bad guys. He is on Shudder Island looking for an escaped mental patient, and he also has a secret agenda. But, as far as the girl goes - how in the world did she ever get out of a locked room, around a bunch of orderlies, out of the hospital ward? She left a secret code that Teddy decodes because he is a Marshall and worked some code in WWII. Teddy and his partner encounter all kinds of strange things on the island, but once the mystery is solved they can't wait to get off. Getting off the island proves a little difficult.
This book blindsided me and I thought it was a taunt, fast reading mystery! If you want to escape where the world isn't all as it seems or want a book that will keep you guessing, this is it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed all of the characters and the creepy atmosphere on Shutter Island. I really enjoyed reading a book as tightly written and spellbinding as Lehane has written here. I wanted to start over once I finshed the book because the only problem was - I finished it too fast.

Shutter Island Dennis Lehane 9780380731862 Books Reviews
I finished reading most of Dennis Lehane's work last year. Although the later Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro books are outstanding (namely Sacred, Gone Baby Gone, and Prayers for Rain), Shutter Island is my favorite (and, ironically enough, was also the one I had a hard time convincing myself to read before starting it). I have not seen the newly released film and probably will not see it any time soon. I have heard that the plot in the film is pretty transparent early on. Thankfully, this is not the case in the book. A reader is put into a mental institution in the 1950s and must determine what is going on and why. The plot unfolds like a hardboiled detective story, but one gets the sense that all is not right as the various characters interact against the backdrop of a great storm. Edward "Teddy" Daniels struggles with questions of identity and reality. However, to compound Daniels' problem is the fact that he has a dark, tragic past. Lehane mixes the complexities of past and present brilliantly and, in doing so, creates a world that stays with the reader long after the book is finished.
Lehane is a master at creating palpable tension between the covers of a book, and nowhere is that more evident than in Shutter Island. Two U.S. Marshals arrive on the island, now a hospital for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Along the way, they begin to get hints of disturbing secrets behind the treatments being performed on the prisoner-patients, and find themselves in danger as their presence becomes a threat to the commanding staff and the place’s continued existence.
Or … do they? Lehane bends and twists reality until the reader is no longer entirely sure who they are themselves, let alone the characters on the page in front of them. The way Lehane manipulates the reader’s sense of what’s true mimics the way those delusional patients seem incapable of understanding or adapting to the world around them. By the final gut-punch chapter, I was no longer sure of anything, except that Dennis Lehane is a hell of a writer.
(But seriously, what the hell happened there at the end??)
The less you know the better can be truly said about this popular thriller that takes the reader on a harrowing journey through the battlefields of the human mind with an epic storm and setting that is sure to get the reader’s pulse racing will all the possibilities and mysteries within. If it is a question if you should read the novel first or see the silver screen adaptation before previewing the pages, please learn from my slight error (although I still enjoyed and recommend the movie version) and sit back with a copy of Shutter Island and get ready for a maze-like story with multiple points of interest and slides on the points of reality and insanity. Although the modern spiced language may somewhat disappoint some (if you are looking for authentic sounding dialogue), the presented personalities are just "there" with little color or shading and more than one or two “twists” or “clues” to the final answers are revealed too early in the beginning; this is still a unique novel with its own sinister images and secrets that may really get into the reader’s head by the final page.
I don’t read a lot, but this is one of those books that I will continue to read, and will forever make time to read whenever I have the chance. I wish I could count the amount of times I have argued over the ending with my friends. I was enticed from the beginning and found myself reading this book whenever I had the chance, even skipping out on a good nights sleep to read a few more chapters. I had seen the movie before I read the book (DiCaprio makes a good Teddy Daniels) but the movie does not do this book justice. This is one of those books that you will want to (not have to, but actually want to) re-read to see if you missed anything. Overall, a simply terrific book. An easy 5 out of 5 stars.
